Donor-Advised Funds are administered by a third party, like the Winona Community Foundation, and allow you to give cash, stock, and other assets with an immediate tax deduction and grant-specified amounts to charities of your choice at a later time.

How It Works

  1. Establish your Fund by making an irrevocable, tax-deductible donation to a public charity that sponsors a Donor Advised Fund program like the Winona Community Foundation

  2. Recommend grants to qualified public charities of your choice

Advantages of Donor Advised Funds

Donor-advised funds provide a number of benefits that direct donations to a charity may not, such as:

  • Simplicity – The Fund sponsor handles record-keeping, disbursements, and tax receipts

  • Flexibility – The timing of your tax deduction can be separate from your charitable decision making

  • Tax-efficiency – Contributions are tax-deductible and any investment growth in your fund is tax-free. It is also easy to donate long term appreciated securities, eliminating capital gains taxes and allowing you to support multiple charities from one block of stock

  • Family legacy – Your fund is a powerful way to build or continue a tradition of family philanthropy

  • Privacy if desired – You may choose to remain anonymous to the grant recipient
